Certified Compostable Resin Options

ASTM D6400 covers plastics and products made from plastics that are designed for aerobic composting in municipal or industrial composting facilities. The current ASTM specification, D6400-26, addresses compostability under thermophilic conditions and establishes requirements for identifying plastics designed for these facilities.
ASTM D6868 applies to products that incorporate biodegradable plastic films or polymers with paper and other compostable substrates. The standard addresses products designed for aerobic composting in municipal and industrial facilities.

Compostable Does Not Mean Biodegradable in Every Environment
The terms compostable and biodegradable describe different material characteristics.
A compostable plastic must meet defined requirements under specified composting conditions. ASTM D6400, for example, covers plastics designed for aerobic municipal and industrial composting facilities.
This distinction matters when selecting compostable film. Industrial and municipal composting facilities use controlled conditions that differ from a backyard compost pile, landfill, soil, or natural environment.
Compostability claims should therefore match the certification, product specification, and disposal infrastructure available for the finished product.
